Gasgrid Finland fulfils legal requirements for independence

By its decision of 19 August 2020, the Finnish Energy Authority has established Gasgrid Finland Oy’s independence in natural gas transmission network operations.

Gasgrid Finland Oy submitted an application for verification of the independence of the transmission system operator with system responsibility to the Energy Authority on 14 January 2020. The Energy Authority issued an interim decision on the matter on 4 May 2020, which the European Commission had no objections to in its statement of 2 July 2020.

According to the Energy Authority, Gasgrid Finland has no connections to the production and supply of natural gas or electricity that could jeopardise the transmission system operator’s independence in natural gas transmission network operations. The condition of the decision is to transfer the part of the Balticconnector pipeline belonging to Baltic Connector Oy to the direct ownership of Gasgrid Finland Oy as soon as the obligations of Baltic Connector Oy in relation to the European Commission have been met.
