The transmission system operators in Finland and Estonia have published preliminary transmission capacities for the Balticconnector interconnection point for the period of 10/2020 – 12/2021

It is the aim of Gasgrid Finland to enhance the efficiency of the gas market and the competitiveness of gases by publishing information that is important for the market, thus improving the predictability and transparency of the market. As part of enhancing predictability, the transmission system operators in Finland, Estonia and Latvia have, in cooperation, estimated the future transmission capacities in the regional transmission systems.

The capacity that will be placed available is dependent on many technical factors of the network, as well as presumptions about how the commercial market will behave. As a result of the exploratory work, transmission system operators in Finland and Estonia have published the preliminary transmission capacities provided below for the Balticconnector interconnection point.

Estonia’s transmission system operator Elering published an UMM on 7 September 2020 according to which the completion of the Puiatu compressor station will be delayed until December 2020, which is taken into account in the above preliminary transmission capacities.

When Estonia’s compressor capacity is completed, the limiting factor in the regional system will be the section between Latvia’s and Estonia’s networks, and therefore the completion of the Paldiski compressor station will not significantly change the transmission capability of the regional system from the south to the north during winter period. Since the limiting point of the regional network affecting winter period capacity is between Latvia and Estonia, the Balticconnector capacities notified above are still dependent on the market participants usage of Värska entry point to import gas to the Estonian system that allows to transfer all the imported gas directly to Finland.
