US-based Plug Power Inc. announced billion-dollar hydrogen investments in Finland in a press conference held on Tuesday, May 30, 2023. The company revealed its intentions to build three hydrogen plants in different locations in Finland. During the event, a Memorandum of Understanding signed with Gasgrid Finland on the development of hydrogen plant projects and transmission infrastructure in cooperation was also announced.
The cooperation between the companies is yet another step forward in the development of the national hydrogen network, in which Gasgrid Finland plays a key role. In summer of 2022, the Finnish government gave Gasgrid Finland a mandate to start developing Finland’s national hydrogen network and the infrastructure enabling the regional hydrogen market on an accelerated schedule to support the development of the hydrogen economy in Finland.
With the help of hydrogen-based solutions, emissions and the price of energy can be reduced, energy self-sufficiency and well-being in Finland can be improved, and Europe’s clean energy needs can also be met. “Cooperation through the entire value chain creates the best possible conditions for investments and the development the hydrogen infrastructure and market, thereby promoting green industrialization and sustainable growth in Finland,” says Gasgrid Finland’s Sara Kärki, SVP, Hydrogen Development.
