Gasgrid’s municipal briefings presented preliminary regional routing options for hydrogen transmission pipelines

In June, we organised 11 virtual info briefings focusing on Finland’s future regional routing options for the hydrogen transmission pipeline. The hydrogen transmission pipeline is a significant step towards a carbon-neutral society, but the hydrogen infrastructure is also expected to bring significant economic growth both locally in the form of jobs and industry.

The 11 events held so far have involved a total of about 200 municipal professionals from areas such as land use and town planning. The discussions will continue in the regions during autumn 2024.

The hydrogen info events reviewed the following:

  • The hydrogen economy in Europe and Finland and Gasgrid’s role in implementing Finland’s national hydrogen transmission pipeline
  • Progress of route planning and construction schedule
  • Basics of route planning, such as regulation, environmental impact assessment and land use
  • Preliminary routing of the hydrogen transmission pipeline by region

“We are delighted that municipalities actively participated in our events. We will collect the feedback and proposals for development we receive and work on them during the autumn, where applicable, as part of our route planning. The routing options presented at this stage are the first drafts, and several changes are expected based on consultations that have already taken place and will be held towards the end of the year, as well as the responses to our market survey,” says Heli Virkki, Hydrogen Valley Lead at Gasgrid.

The info events will continue in the autumn as physical meetings targeted at companies in the regions, which will allow the discussions to be deepened.
