Hydrogen producers can obtain PCI status for their electrolysis projects and then apply for EU public funding for their investments. Subsidies awarded for hydrogen investments improve the profitability of hydrogen projects and increase the attractiveness of the hydrogen economy to the end-user.
Gasgrid’s task is to develop a hydrogen transmission infrastructure that enables the scaling up of the hydrogen economy and highlights Finland’s significant role in the hydrogen economy of Europe as a whole. The hydrogen network will connect hydrogen producers and consumers not only within Finland, but also across Europe.
Gasgrid has applied for CEF funding for its cross-border hydrogen infrastructure projects, and also hydrogen producers, i.e. industrial companies, have an opportunity to accelerate the development of the hydrogen economy and apply for EU public subsidies for their electrolyser investments.
Under the eligibility criteria, a hydrogen project with a capacity of at least 50 MW is eligible. The eligibility criteria also include a requirement that the investment must cross borders, i.e. the electrolysis equipment must supply energy either directly or indirectly to at least two EU Member States.
“This is an interesting opportunity for hydrogen producers. EU subsidies will improve the profitability of the hydrogen economy and make hydrogen more attractive to the end user. I would encourage all hydrogen operators to find out as soon as possible whether their investment projects meet the required criteria, as so far no Finnish operator is on the list of those who have received support,” says Heli Virkki, Head of Hydrogen Valley Development at Gasgrid.
“Gasgrid is currently working on three cross-border hydrogen infrastructure projects: Nordic Hydrogen Route, Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor and Baltic Sea Hydrogen Collector. The purpose of these projects is to enable the cross-border transport of hydrogen to Sweden and the other Nordic countries, for example,” Virkki points out.
