Updated national hydrogen infrastructure route plan announced at Gasgrid’s Future of Gases event

Gasgrid held a Future of Gases event – for its stakeholders on 27 November 2024 in Helsinki. The updated national hydrogen infrastructure route was announced at the event. This marks a major step towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

Gasgrid has announced an updated route plan based on the first route plan published in April 2024. The update is based on signals from market operators on hydrogen production and consumption, planned and under construction wind power generation, the electricity grid, CO2 production, and existing methane and rail networks and ports. The combined impact of all these is relevant for electricity consumption, for example.

Feedback from all municipalities along the route of the national hydrogen pipeline published in April has been taken into account as far as possible in the route plan.

The planned route will run along the west coast from Sea Lapland towards Southern Finland, initially in areas with significant potential for hydrogen production and/or use, for example in industry and transport. The route plan has considered the geographical need for hydrogen transmission, which will allow for large-scale utilisation of hydrogen production and market scaling. The role of the transmission network is to connect hydrogen production and consumption sites efficiently and in a way that offers the best value for money and contributes to sustainable development. In addition to promoting route planning, Gasgrid said that the next steps in designing the hydrogen infrastructure will be the environmental impact assessment process and work on the interconnection capacity of regional hydrogen valleys.

The updated hydrogen backbone was published as part of Gasgrid’s Future of Gases –event, which also covered other current topics, such as the impact of the global political situation on Finland’s energy policy and the role of gases in the electricity system. Speakers at the event included CEO Risto E.J. Penttilä (Nordic West Office), President and CEO Tuomas Rauhala (Fingrid), CEO Toni Krankkala (NIHAK) and Head of Technology Antti Pohjoranta (e-Tehdas).
