Gas transmission company Gasgrid aims to accelerate the development of regional hydrogen valleys in Finland and the national hydrogen infrastructure to be operational in the early 2030s in accordance with the mandate given by the Finnish government. In addition, Gasgrid develops the hydrogen market in the Baltic Sea region in collaboration with our neighbouring countries. Gasgrid is now publishing its first hydrogen information package to promote the development of the hydrogen market and support future market participants.
The hydrogen information package aims to address the market’s information needs regarding the development of the Finnish hydrogen network and the framework for accessing and operating within the network. The information package includes Gasgrid’s current view of market developments, the principles of network connection, and the market model for hydrogen pipeline transmission. In addition, the package facilitates the collection of feedback from market participants on market needs for network operation and market rules and supports market dialogue already in the early stages of market formation.
-As we are creating a completely new type of infrastructure, ecosystem and industry, and a lot is going on in parallel in the industry, Gasgrid considers active market dialogue and a participatory process to be extremely valuable. Through hydrogen information packages, Gasgrid can share information with market participants about the development of the Finnish hydrogen network and, more broadly, the European market, says Sara Kärki, SVP of Hydrogen Development at Gasgrid.
-The aim is for the information shared on the principles and market model for connecting to the hydrogen network to serve as a basis for future hydrogen market conditions, which will be developed in cooperation with market participants, say Henriikka Pilpola and Elina Mäki from Gasgrid, who compiled the information package.

The first information package brings together the development of the hydrogen network in Finland and Europe
The published information package is the first in a series of information packages. The first information package brings together general views on the development of the hydrogen network in Finland and more broadly in the Baltic Sea region and the European Union.
The package sheds light on the hydrogen infrastructure development process, the cooperation-based commitment process, the technical design principles of the transmission infrastructure, routing and licensing processes, the principles of network connection, and the market model for hydrogen pipeline transmission, as well as the emission targets set in the EU’s hydrogen and gas carbon dioxide emission reduction package.
The information package will be updated approximately one to two times a year. Future packages will further explore selected topics, such as developments in EU and national legislation, including network codes, and share lessons learned from the European market.
Give feedback on the package and influence the future hydrogen market
With the hydrogen information package, Gasgrid aims to increase market dialogue and reduce market uncertainty. Gasgrid invites market participants to join the dialogue to shape the future of hydrogen network operations and pave the way for well-functioning hydrogen market rules. Regulatory authorities, investors, municipal actors, and other stakeholders are also key participants in the dialogue.
You can discover the first hydrogen information package and give us feedback on its content. We have launched a market survey where you can leave your feedback on the package and your wishes for the next version of the hydrogen information package.
As a concrete step towards building a Finnish hydrogen network, we would also like to hear your views on hydrogen quality requirements in the network.
