Annual Report 2025: Gasgrid develops its transmission network to meet the growing demand for renewable gases

In Gasgrid’s sixth year of operation, both the demand for renewable gases and customers’ interest in connecting to the transmission network grew. The company issued Finland’s first guarantees of origin (GO) for renewable hydrogen, and international hydrogen projects were granted EU funding. Gasgrid began to explore the expansion of the gas transmission network to Western Finland, and the first letters of intent for the future national hydrogen infrastructure were signed with market participants. By developing the gas transmission infrastructure, Gasgrid promotes Finland’s energy self-sufficiency and creates a foundation for sustainable growth. The newly published Annual Report describes the progress made in Gasgrid’s business, strategy, and sustainability in 2025.

For Gasgrid, 2025 was a year of stabilisation of the gas market and close stakeholder co-operation. Gasgrid developed its transmission network to meet the growing demand for renewable gases.

“During the year, we held negotiations with biomethane and e-methane producers on connecting to the transmission network, and we estimated the entry potential of renewable gases in Finland to be approximately seven terawatt hours. We also initiated a study for expanding the methane transmission network to Western Finland in order to tap into the region’s significant entry potential for renewable energy. We also signed 20 letters of intent with future hydrogen infrastructure market participants. By the end of 2025, the reported hydrogen production and consumption capacity exceeded 13 gigawatts, which would create a strong foundation for Finland’s hydrogen market once realised,” says Gasgrid’s CEO Olli Sipilä.

Gasgrid continued to develop the transmission platform for diverse gases and the planning of the hydrogen transmission infrastructure and market.

“The goal is to contribute to Finland’s competitiveness and security of supply. In uncertain times, developing the energy system is more important than ever, and gases play a key role in balancing the system,” Sipilä adds.

As the registrar of the register of guarantees of origin for gas, Gasgrid issued Finland’s first guarantees of origin (GO) for renewable hydrogen at the end of 2025. This is proof that the hydrogen economy’s development is beginning to take shape and strengthens trust in the traceability of renewable gases. Gasgrid issues GOs for biomethane, e-methane, and hydrogen.

National hydrogen infrastructure moves forward – EU funding improves Finland’s investment conditions

During the year under review, Gasgrid took significant steps in planning the national hydrogen infrastructure.
“We arranged dozens of voluntary landowner events and met with hundreds of landowners from Tornio in the north to Uusimaa in the south. The planned approximately 1,500-kilometre-long infrastructure affects around 14,000 landowners in Finland,” Sipilä says.

All three international hydrogen infrastructure projects promoted by Gasgrid together with its partners proceeded to the feasibility study phase and received altogether EUR 51.4 million in EU funding, improving Finland’s investment conditions.

According to Sipilä, the projects support the operating conditions for high value-added industry.
“The projects also strengthen Finland’s position in the European hydrogen economy and support energy self-sufficiency and competitiveness,” he points out.

The Annual Report includes a comprehensive Sustainability Report

The Annual Report has been published as an accessible PDF report on our website. The report includes a review of Gasgrid’s business and strategy progress, and a comprehensive Sustainability Report, a statement on governance and remuneration, as well as the Report by the Board of Directors and financial statements. The extensive Sustainability Report is based on a double materiality assessment drawn up according to the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), as applicable. Separately specified disclosure requirements and data points have been verified in the report.

The reports are also available on our Publications page .
