The working group on fossil-free flexibility appointed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment has published a report on a model aimed at ensuring sufficient weather-independent energy production in Finland. According to the model, the identified technical production needs will be put out to tender in a technology-neutral manner among market participants.
According to Gasgrid’s preliminary assessment, the current gas market and infrastructure are technically well suited to provide solutions for the described competitive tendering. The transmission capacity of the gas system is sufficient to reliably connect new customer sites, such as gas engine power plants.
“New gas engine power plants could potentially be commissioned in approximately two to three years, which would be in line with the incentive for rapid production completion set out in the competitive tendering process. In addition, the gas transmission network is mainly located in areas where connecting production will earn points in the competitive tendering process”, says Janne Grönlund, Director of Gas Business at Gasgrid. “Our goal is to create value for our customers and society. Gasgrid welcomes market participants to discuss the connectivity of new plants”, Grönlund continues.
Gas-fired production also offers significant technical advantages: it can operate continuously for almost unlimited periods, enabling rapid ramp-up and balancing the electricity market.
Fossil-free gas is already available on the market, and the volumes of renewable domestic biogas and synthetic methane are expected to grow significantly in the coming years. This will further improve the availability of fossil-free methane gas.
