The European standard SFS-EN 16325:2025 Guarantees of origin related to energy, has been published. The standard specifies and harmonizes the use and application of guarantees of origin in the EU so that the renewable origin of energy can be reliably disclosed to end customers. The main objective of the standard is to create a reliable, accurate, and fraud-proof guarantee of origin system.
The European standard is intended to specify requirements for a guarantee of origin scheme for renewable energy, which now covers not only electricity but also gas, including methane and hydrogen, as well as heating and cooling.
Benefits of the standard
- Enables reliable verification of the renewable origin of energy.
- Supports the EU’s climate and energy targets.
- Public actors can demonstrate the use of renewable energy in their procurement.
- Provides financiers and investors with reliable information on the renewable origin of energy.
The standard is available from the online store
The standard is available from the SFS online store in English and in Finnish. Although the application of the standard is mandatory, its practical implementation in Finland has not yet been regulated nationally. Guidance will be provided by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy (TEM) and the Finnish Energy Authority.
