Finnish gas market successfully opened

The Finnish gas market was successfully opened up to competition on 1 January 2020. Gas sales has now been unbundled from the gas transmission network. Several operators have emerged on the market.

Gasgrid Finland Oy is responsible for the Finnish gas transmission network, and together with its customers and partners it was ready to open the Finnish gas market on 1 January 2020 at 7:00 am. No major commercial or technical challenges have occurred during the first week. Several operators have emerged on the Finnish gas market to utilise market mechanisms.

Gas is now flowing according to plans also in the new Balticconnector gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia. During the first week, the pipeline’s capacity towards Finland has been in full use.

“Our goal has been to ensure that all market participants get their gas reliably and are provided sufficient and accurate information to be able to operate efficiently. We hope the participants take an active role, enabling us to further develop our operations according to needs. Relating to this, we will be organising a customer event on 12 February 2020,” says Olli Sipilä, the CEO of Gasgrid Finland.

General market data will be published also in the Gasgrid portal and on the Transparency platform of the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas (ENTSOG).

Any commercial inquiries about the market can be sent to commercial@gasgrid.fi.
