The Baltic States and Finland, together with the European Commission, are investigating the possibilities and impacts of a possible deepening of gas market integration. The objective of the investigation is to identify an optimal way to facilitate market integration in the coming years.
The European Commission, as well as the Energy Ministers of Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, regulation authorities and transmission system operators, have agreed on a common road map concerning the promotion of the countries’ gas market integration process. Seeking a common market of four countries is the first project of its kind in the EU.
The market integration work stems from a goal of improving the security of supply in the area, increasing the efficiency of the utilization of infrastructure and future investments, improving liquidity and increasing competition so that gas users can get gas at an even more reasonable cost as well as better quality service. As regards Finland, Gasgrid Finland is investigating the promotion of market integration and its impacts in close cooperation with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and the Energy Authority of Finland.
