Sustainability

The energy sector plays a key role in enabling the green transition. Our goal is to support society’s shift towards a carbon-neutral future by building a carbon‑neutral gas system and the national hydrogen network, as well as by promoting the adoption of low‑emitting gases.

We bear our responsibility

Sustainability is an integral part of our strategy, values, and everyday operations and management. We take responsibility for the impacts our operations have on the environment, on society, and on the people we interact with. In our own operations, we aim to achieve carbon neutrality for the methane system — the current gas transmission network — and are committed to safety and the reliable transmission of gases, and the wellbeing of our people.

Our responsibility, however, does not end with our own activities. By enabling the use of renewable gases, such as biogas and e‑methane, in our transmission network and by building the future hydrogen infrastructure, we help our customers achieve their climate and sustainability targets and support Finland’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2035.

Sustainbility program

Our sustainability programme is in effect for the period 2025–2026, i.e. until the end of the current strategy period. The programme is based on a double materiality assessment in compliance with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), carried out in autumn 2024. The assessment forms the foundation for Gasgrid’s sustainability objectives and guides the company’s operations towards a carbon‑neutral and safe energy system. The programme consists of four ESG themes related to environmental responsibility, social responsibility and good governance: Excellent governance (G), People and culture (S), Transmission reliability and safety (S), and Environmental responsibility (E).

Towards carbon-neutrality

Our goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035, in line with Finland’s and the EU’s climate targets. Our carbon‑neutrality roadmap guides our operations and is based on rapid emission reductions and the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable and low‑carbon solutions. Our investments focus particularly on infrastructure for renewable gases and hydrogen, as well as on measures that reduce emissions.

Although no scientific compatibility assessment has been carried out, our objectives and actions are aligned with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target. Our investments therefore prioritise renewable gas and hydrogen infrastructure and concrete emission‑reduction measures.

Introducing of biogas

The introduction of biogas for self-consumption will help reduce fossil emissions.

Our commitments

We do business in a way that respects the UN Sustainable Development Goals and are committed to acting in accordance with the UN Global Compact Principles for Responsible Business.

In 2020, we also pledged to promote the Society’s Commitment to Sustainable Development. The commitment defines the practices and goals for enabling a good life and its vision is a prosperous and responsible Finland that safeguards the carrying capacity of nature. Our goal is to reduce methane emissions by 20 tonnes between 2020 and 2025 through active measures. We estimate that we will calculate and publish a new commitment in spring 2026.
