Important steps forward have been reached in the Nordic Hydrogen Route and Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor projects. Gasgrid Finland is involved in both international hydrogen infrastructure projects together with its European partners.
The Nordic Hydrogen Route and the Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor, which aim to develop the hydrogen market in Northern Europe, have progressed to the next stages of development. The projects support the construction of cross-border hydrogen infrastructure and the future hydrogen market in Europe.
The feasibility study phase of the hydrogen transmission network planned for the Bay of Bothnia between Finland and Sweden in the Nordic Hydrogen Route project has been completed. Based on the study, the project will move to the next phase of development, which will focus on the continuation of licensing procedures, market dialogue and ensuring technical and regulatory capacity, among other things. The Nordic Hydrogen Route project has been designated by the European Commission as a PCI project of common EU interest, and in 2025 the project received €29.4 million in funding through the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility energy programme.
The Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor project, on the other hand, has published the results of a market consultation, which shows interest in a cross-border hydrogen transmission infrastructure. The project is currently in the feasibility study phase, and besides Gasgrid involves Elering in Estonia, Conexus Baltic Grid in Latvia, Amber Grid in Lithuania, GAZ-SYSTEM in Poland and ONTRAS Gastransport in Germany. The technical, commercial and regulatory studies are expected to complete in 2027. The Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor project has been granted €6.8 million in funding from the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for the implementation of the feasibility phase.
Both projects are part of a broader European development that to build the conditions for a renewable and low-carbon hydrogen market and cross-border energy infrastructure. The progress of international projects will contribute to strengthening the conditions for the future hydrogen economy and the achievement of Europe’s energy and climate targets.
