Gasgrid’s market survey identified potential for almost 7 TWh of renewable methane, major cluster in Satakunta

A national market survey conducted by gas transmission company Gasgrid identified a total of nearly 7 terawatt hours of annual renewable methane production and consumption potential in Finland, which has not yet been connected to the gas transmission network. The responses highlighted in particular the production and consumption potential of the Satakunta region, which accounted for approximately 60% of the total volume identified in the survey. The results will be drawn on in the further planning of any expansion of the methane transmission network as well as in the development of the existing network to meet customer needs.

In spring 2026, Gasgrid conducted a nationwide market survey to gauge the interest of companies and organisations in connecting the methane network, as well as their views on the development of the existing network, and locations, timing and purposes of potential network expansions. The survey is related to the development of Gasgrid’s long-term methane gas transmission network and the planning of any regional network expansions.

A total of 24 responses were received to the survey between April and June 2026. Based on the responses, the new production and consumption potential of methane identified is approximately 6.9 TWh/year. Of this, approximately 1.4 TWh is consumption potential and 5.5 TWh is production potential, which corresponds to 40-50 % of Finland’s current gas consumption.

Satakunta region accounted for just over 4 TWh/year of the renewable methane production and consumption potential identified in the survey.

“The results of the market survey confirm our view that there is significant interest in the production and use of renewable methane in Finland. Based on the survey, Satakunta in particular forms a clear cluster, where the production opportunities of synthetic and bio-based methane meet the industrial applications identified. These include, for example, the synthetic methane production plant projects planned for the region,” says Janne Grönlund, SVP, Gas Business at Gasgrid.

“Renewable methane will enable a significant increase in gas self-sufficiency in Finland and in this way strengthen the vitality of the existing gas market. Renewable gases support the green transition.”

Survey results to be drawn on in further planning of the gas transmission network

The responses to the survey focused on projects in the early stages of development but also included sites in planning and production. The results depict the current plans and potential reported by actors and are not binding investment decisions.

Gasgrid will draw on the results of the survey in planning gas transmission network routes and further discussions.

“We will continue discussions with actors to ensure planned production and consumption volumes, project schedules and grid connection needs. For example, the memorandum of understanding signed with the operator planning an e-methane project in Rauma is the first concrete step in advancing regional development work”, says Henriikka Pilpola, Development Manager at Gasgrid.

The market survey was carried out as part of Gasgrid’s study aimed at ensuring that the gas transmission network would serve the future needs of Finnish industry, energy production and new gas businesses.
