Gasgrid is investigating potential expansion needs for the natural gas transmission network, as well as building hydrogen infrastructure on Finland’s western coast based on local needs. The gas network supports the country’s energy self-sufficiency, industrial growth and green transition.
By developing its gas transmission network, Gasgrid enables the transmission of renewable and low-carbon gases as part of Finland’s overall energy system. These gases include biomethane, e-methane and hydrogen. Finland’s green transition goals are being advanced in industry, energy production and transport, which creates demand for renewable gases. The gas transmission network supports the energy system’s balance and security of supply.
Under the mandate of the Finnish government, Gasgrid is planning a new national energy infrastructure – a hydrogen transmission network that will bring competitiveness to municipalities, companies and the whole of Finland. Our country has excellent conditions for hydrogen production, as we generate an abundance of renewable energy needed in the process.
Gasgrid began conducting an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for a national hydrogen transmission network in 2025. In addition to the EIA, Gasgrid organised voluntary landowner events in 2025–2026 in which feedback was collected from landowners concerning the planned route. Altogether 41 meetings were arranged, with more than 6,000 people taking part. Meetings will also be arranged during the upcoming phases of the project.
The routing plan will be revised once the assessments are completed and based on the feedback Gasgrid received.
The national and local need to expand the gas transmission network was reviewed in spring 2026 using a market survey, based on which Gasgrid will revise its plans.
Gasgrid’s goal is for the first sections of the hydrogen pipeline and the expansion of the natural gas transmission network to be operational in the early 2030s.
The idea behind the planning is to find the best possible route for the natural gas and hydrogen pipelines, considering, for example
Fields are favoured where possible in planning the pipeline’s route.
We will provide updates on our plans for the development of the natural gas transmission network on our website as these plans progress. You can view the updated route plan for the hydrogen network at gasgrid.fi/karttapalaute.
