When transmitting gas, the safety of residents and the environment is considered at every step, starting with the planning of the network. When the transmission network is operational, it is monitored continuously.
The safety of gas transmission in Finland has been a focal area ever since the gas transmission network began operating in southeast and southern Finland in the 1970s. Equally strict safety standards are applied to the planned hydrogen gas transmission network, as well as to the expansion of the methane transmission network under consideration.
Gas transmission requires a permit which is governed by, among other things, legislation and technical standards as well as national regulatory requirements. The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) functions as a key gas transmission safety authority with responsibility for regulatory control during operation.
“The operations need to meet the demands of multiple technical standards as well. There are special requirements for hydrogen transmission pipes, for example with regard to material characteristics,” says Gasgrid’s Head of Process Safety, Aki Huomo.
Gasgrid is the transmission network operator responsible for the safety of gas transmission throughout the lifecycle of the network.
The hydrogen infrastructure is being designed with consideration for the special characteristics of hydrogen. Pre-emptive maintenance and safety are key.
“Just as with the current natural gas network, the hydrogen infrastructure will be monitored 24/7. The condition of the pipes will be monitored pre-emptively and systematically. The condition of the transmission network and the gas transmission process will be monitored continuously and any deviations will come to the attention of a specialist in the control room in real time,” Huomo says.
In accordance with the principles of preparedness, Gasgrid and authorities prepare for any deviations and emergencies. Gasgrid co-operates regularly with the rescue department and organises exercises.
When a pipe is in the ground and in use, its location is clearly marked using signposts and it is covered by a thick protective layer of soil. Engaging in activities that could damage the pipeline is prohibited. Any construction or other earthworks planned in the vicinity of a pipeline require a permit. Gasgrid offers a free service to ensure safe work in the vicinity of a gas pipeline.
Hydrogen is colourless, odourless and non-toxic, and safe when handled appropriately. It is, however, flammable, which is why it requires careful handling.
The hydrogen inside the pipeline cannot ignite as the pipes do not contain oxygen, which is essential for combustion.
