A Polish energy sector delegation attended an event organised by Gasgrid and the Finnish Hydrogen Cluster in Keilaranta, Espoo. Cooperation between Finland and Poland will intensify as the hydrogen economy progresses towards industrial investments and a common European market. A Polish delegation learnt about ongoing hydrogen projects in Finland and plans for transmission connections in the Baltic Sea Region.
Following the hype phase, the hydrogen economy has started to move towards concrete investments and project development. At the same time, cross-border cooperation will be strengthened, with the aim of creating a common hydrogen market for the countries of Northern and Central Europe.These themes featured strongly when a Polish energy delegation visited Finland in late August. During their visit, the group, consisting of representatives of companies and public administration, learnt about Finnish hydrogen economy projects and discussed cooperation opportunities with Finnish actors.Four Finnish companies implementing hydrogen projects introduced themselves to the Polish visitors at an event organised by Gasgrid Finland and Hydrogen Cluster Finland in Keilaranta, Espoo. At the same time, there was an opportunity for networking with Finnish actors.
Riitta Silvennoinen, Managing Director of Hydrogen Cluster Finland, told the Polish visitors that the work is currently focusing on securing investments to implement the hydrogen economy.“We believe strongly in European cooperation, especially in the Baltic Sea Region. The development of the hydrogen economy requires interaction on many different levels,” Silvennoinen pointed out.
Szymon Płoński, who headed the Polish delegation, said that the visit to Finland provides a comprehensive overview of ongoing projects. He chairs the Board of Directors of the Lower Silesian Hydrogen Valley, which is one of Poland’s key hydrogen clusters.“The discussions that took place during the visit strengthen our understanding that it is worth taking the hydrogen economy forward together. Finland and Poland have shared interests.”
P2X Solutions, which operates in Harjavalta, said that it is the first company in Finland to begin commercial production of green hydrogen. A plant for the production of synthetic methane, or e-methane, also operates in conjunction with the hydrogen plant.P2X Solutions recently entered into a long-term agreement on the supply of e-methane with the German company Avanca Energy. Tuomo Rinne, VP, Business Development at P2X Solutions, said that the agreement means that the current production capacity of the Harjavalta plant has been sold out for the next ten years.“The first phase of the partnership focuses on clean fuels for heavy-duty road transport in Germany,” Rinne said.According to Rinne, Germany’s decision to introduce a 10% mandate for green hydrogen and synthetic fuels in road transport by 2040 as part of the country’s plan to comply with the EU’s RED III Directive will significantly increase demand for e-methane and boost production investments in Europe.“We, too, are planning new production plants in Joensuu and Oulu, for example. Our goal is a total of 1000 megawatts of hydrogen production capacity over the next decade,” Rinne said.
Nordic Ren-Gas is planning a decentralised production network in Finland that will produce renewable e-methane for heavy-duty transport and industry, emission-free heat for district heating networks and flexibility for the electricity system.Like P2X Solutions, Ren-Gas recently signed an offtake agreement with the German company Avanca Energy for renewable methane valued at €1 billion over its term. The e-methane from the production plant under development in Tampere will be used by heavy-duty vehicles through the existing gas infrastructure,” said Olli Lahtinen, Process Manager at Ren-Gas.“The agreement is a significant step towards an international renewable e-methane supply chain. The market outlook for e-methane has clearly improved, as it has several other applications besides transport,” Lahtinen pointed out.Ren-Gas has entered into a cooperation agreement also with the Polish energy company ORLEN. The goal is to build a supply chain for renewable hydrogen—and in particular for e-methane —that stretches from Finland to Poland.
Jussi Ylinen, CEO of Green North Energy, spoke about plans which focus on the production of green hydrogen and its downstream processing into ammonia. The company’s first major project is the hydrogen and ammonia plant planned for Naantali.“The hydrogen plant concept we have developed is scalable and can be replicated in new locations,” Ylinen said.According to Ylinen, there is already a market for green ammonia, as it is needed to replace fossil raw materials in the fertiliser industry and the chemical industry, among other things. In the future, it can also be used as a low-emission fuel for shipping.“Green ammonia produced in Finland is also important for security of supply, as it reduces dependence on raw materials imported from elsewhere,” Ylinen said.
Jaana Viitakangas, Development Manager at energy company Helen, spoke about the 3H2 – Helsinki Hydrogen Hub pilot plant to be built in Vuosaari, Helsinki. The plant will produce green hydrogen using renewable electricity and is scheduled to start up in late 2026. The hydrogen produced will be used especially in heavy-duty transport.“We want to acquire practical expertise in the production of green hydrogen and prepare for much larger projects later,” Viitakangas reasoned.According to Viitakangas, hydrogen can diversify future energy production and act as a link between electricity production, district heating, transport and industry. The waste heat generated in hydrogen production could be utilised in the district heating network, which would contribute to the transition to lower-emission production.
The cross-border hydrogen economy needs efficient transmission logistics. Joonas Laitila, Project Director at Gasgrid, presented plans for hydrogen transmission networks to be built in the Baltic Sea Region which would be connected to Gasgrid’s future national infrastructure to be built in Finland and to the networks of other countries.The Nordic Hydrogen Route (NHR) is a hydrogen transmission network between Finland and Sweden planned for the Bay of Bothnia region. The Polish visitors were particularly interested in the planned Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor (NBHC), which would connect Finland, the Baltic states, Poland and Germany.“If implemented, the NBHC would bring six European countries under an efficient hydrogen transmission network,” Laitila summed up.The feasibility study for the NBHC project will complete in 2027. In addition to the technical feasibility assessment, the study also includes its commercial viability.“The results of the market consultation show the interest of companies in a cross-border hydrogen transmission infrastructure.”Next, the NBHC project will proceed to non-binding letters of intent with interested actors, which will help gauge actual market demand and guide the further planning of the pipeline.
