Gasgrid joins Polish initiative to intensify Baltic Sea Region energy cooperation

Recognition of Baltic Sea region’s energy potential takes a step further as 14 companies from nine countries establish Baltic Energy Initiative.

The Baltic Sea region has the potential to become a true European powerhouse in the clean energy transition. The region combines exceptional opportunities for the production and consumption of renewable electricity, hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives, supported by the potential for large-scale hydrogen storage as well as carbon capture and storage solutions. The region includes both areas with significant production potential and countries where demand is expected to dominate, at least initially.

At the same time, growing geopolitical tensions and increasing threats to critical infrastucture underscore the importance of regional cooperation.

By deepening collaboration across borders, the Baltic Sea countries and companies can strengthen energy security, unlock investments, address common challenges, and establish the region as a globally competitive center for clean energy, industrial growth, and sustainable prosperity.

Gasgrid Finland has joined the Baltic Energy Initiative to promote Finland’s competitive operating environment, enhance cross-border collaboration, dialogue and promotion of regional strengths. Topics relating to energy security and security of energy infrastructure, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen and hydrogen infrastructure collaboration, LNG markets, and regulatory developments are all essential for Finland, and central to Gasgrid Finland’s strategy.

Gasgrid Finland participated in discussions in Warsaw on opportunities for closer cooperation. Gasgrid Finland CEO Olli Sipilä stated: “We warmly welcome Poland’s leadership in bringing together key stakeholders to advance a common vision for the Baltic Sea region. Finland offers a highly competitive platform for hydrogen and hydrogen derivative investments, but realizing the full potential of the region requires stronger cross-border cooperation. Together, we can create a globally competitive clean energy ecosystem that attracts investment, accelerates industrial growth, strengthens energy security, and establishes the Baltic Sea region as a strategic pillar of Europe’s future economy.”
