Developing Finland’s methane gas and hydrogen infrastructure is a long-term project. By developing a diverse energy system, we are simultaneously investing in our country’s security of supply and energy self-sufficiency. In uncertain times, developing the energy system is more important than ever.
Energy self-sufficiency and gases play an essential role in security of supply. When we are able to produce, store and transmit gas nationally, we are less dependent on imports. Industry, transport and heating can also operate in emergency conditions when our energy-secure day-to-day life is not dependent on a single import route, energy source or operator.
In Finland, we need both electrification and flexible, versatile solutions alongside electricity. In the future, gas investments will boost the flexibility of the electricity system, support industry’s competitiveness and keep energy prices steady.
A vibrant hydrogen and gas market will generate new investments and jobs, and attract capital to Finland.
A good example of development opportunities can be found close by, in Norway. Within a space of 50 years, the country’s natural gas sector has developed from zero to a broad economic sector that offers Norway strong self-sufficiency and competitiveness, not to mention immense export revenues.
Through co-operation, we have the same capacity for development. We consider it important for this development to take place in a way that inspires widespread confidence.
