We put together the questions that landowners most frequently ask at the meetings concerning the hydrogen pipeline. The answers come from Gasgrid’s permitting and land use team’s experts.
The plan is to build the hydrogen transmission network along the western coast from Tornio to southern Finland.
With the help of the hydrogen transmission network, regions could benefit from the opportunities offered by renewable energy, reduce their emissions and strengthen their energy self-sufficiency. The hydrogen infrastructure creates a foundation for the hydrogen economy, which will enable significant investments and strengthen Finland’s role in Europe’s green transition.

Route planning takes into account multiple viewpoints and the end result is a compromise involving many factors, which include the needs of the developing hydrogen market, municipalities’ own land use plans and inhabited areas, as well as bypassing sensitive areas such as protected areas. The goal of the planning is to minimise the harm caused by construction and the pipeline.
Fields are preferred in the routing plan because cultivation can continue normally after the construction work, whereas forest areas require 10-metre-wide rights-of-way areas, which need to be kept clear of trees for safety reasons.
Hydrogen production and consumption facilities are located on land. Building pipe joints and connecting pipes for an underwater pipeline would be extremely challenging.
Construction of the hydrogen infrastructure is a long-term effort that will progress in stages. Market development determines when and where we will start. The goal is for the first sections of the infrastructure to be operational in the early 2030s. Construction will start up as permitting moves forward: environmental impact assessments will continue into 2027, after which the first permit processes will begin.
Experts in subsurface drains will repair them after construction is finished. A subsurface drain cut off at a pipe will be repaired in connection with the construction, and their repair plans and final repairs are made once the hydrogen pipeline construction work has been finished in the area.
During the EIA procedures, extensive surveys are made, for example, of the area’s nature values, and they are refined further at the permitting phase, if required. For example soil surveys are a highly essential part of the planning.
